On April 21st Google will be making a change to its search results algorithm that could have a massive effect on how websites are ranked on mobile devices. Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably aware that mobile device web searching is skyrocketing and will likely overtake desktop users very shortly. Consequently, Google are changing the rules of ranking from April 21st to lift mobile-friendly “responsive” websites within search rankings.
The result of the update will mean those using their mobile to surf, aren’t penalised and are given the most mobile-friendly web pages to view first. Likewise, app indexing means search results will also now include app content for those users signed-in, with their installed apps’ included within their search rankings. So if your website isn’t responsive (doesn’t fit automatically to mobile size layout-wise) or if your app needs to be indexed – then talk to us! All websites that we create are responsive to fit any device – so we can easily convert yours quickly, if it’s not.
This is great news for fully responsive sites, but many people don’t realise that their website isn’t actually mobile-friendly. Else, we can update or overhaul your website completely, if required.
If your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re not alone! The images above show some big name government sites and corporations, such as Tigerair Australia and the Australian Government site australia.gov.au – that are showing up issues, when tested on the Google mobile-friendly link underneath this article. These sites will also be scrambling to initiate changes, to avoid being impacted.
Google claims 50% of searches are currently carried out on mobile devices and this is set to increase globally. Your mobile search competitiveness and performance can be improved through targeting specific keywords, and tracking your ranking compared to the competition. Large text and easy to click links are preferred. Make sure your page upload speeds are fast for mobile. Ensure your most popular pages are the quickest. Flash, content size, and squashed touch elements can create issues for mobile users. Images, CSS and JS need to be crawlable for Googlebots. Make sure your links are active, relevant and all pages are found, so they can be crawled and indexed. Ensure content is able to be accessed, along with meta descriptions and titles.
PSE can analyse your mobile traffic and visibility to see if the top queries/pages in mobile searches are the same as desktop, and which queries have high/low click-through rates – else things can be adjusted, if your mobile users search for information, in different ways. We can advise what pages are trending upwards/downwards and how to approach that. Organic traffic, conversions and bounce rate can be reviewed and adjustments made where necessary. Google Analytics can identify the top mobile devices used by your visitors.
If you have a mobile app, smart app banners can prompt mobile users to download your app. Links to the app store and landing pages also help, as does indexing your app content, allowing users with your app to open content in-app, direct from their mobile searches.
Don’t be left behind in search rankings or with your app content not being featured in search results. Ensure your website is not being hidden from your target audience. More people are using their mobiles to search nowadays, so companies who don’t take this up, may soon lose out to their competitors. Improve your website or app’s ranking as soon as you can, by contacting us prior to these changes take place. You don’t have long before Google initiates these adjustments, which will change current search rankings. However, PSE can help once you’re ready, to improve your rankings quickly and easily. Have no fear, we’re here to resolve this, with a cost-effective solution!
