Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of the movie Now You See Me – and I was at Consentino on the weekend – but the biggest disappearing act is actually underway right now… in the most unexpected of places! Quick – get to know your online audience, before they disappear! It’s the inadvertent metadata magic trick…

It shocked me too! But the changes I discussed last week are now being reported to have started to drive your potential digital audience underground. This means that it will become harder to collect stats on your website’s visitors, and online advertising may become a lot more difficult to track accurately. If younger more tech savvy generations are your target market, this may be especially the case.

The use of VPNs and ad-blockers, which prevent the transmission of metadata, as well as keeping unwanted ads at bay is on the rise. People are beginning to wise up to the potential consequences of being tracked online.

Page Fair and Adobe last month issued a report covering behaviours in 2014. It found that 18.4% of Australian internet users are using some form of ad-blocking software in comparison to 14.5% in the UK and 27% of US users…

In Q2 2014 there were approximately 144 million monthly active ad-block users across the world (4.9% of all internet users); a number which has increased 69% over the previous 12 months, say Page Fair and Adobe.

It highlights the need to concentrate on SEO now to direct your digital advertising, whilst it’s still effective in providing you with a clear guide, as to your online audience. Be sure to map your SEO trends, sooner rather than later, to fully understand user behaviour on your website, and who your digital marketing is reaching – whilst you can still get an accurate overviews to understand your virtual customers and their behaviour. Otherwise, as things change within this sphere, it may be harder to monitor this.
